The quoted law matches the cited authority.
LawEngine checks whether quoted law matches the cited authority in the primary-source corpus before it reaches the court.
Under the Illinois Code of Civil Procedure, "a plaintiff may not obtain a default judgment unless the plaintiff has filed an affidavit showing the nature and amount of the damages" 735 ILCS 5/2‑1301(d). The plaintiff’s failure to file the required affidavit prior to the default hearing renders the judgment void.
Why this matters
In legal work, one bad citation can mean the wrong rule, the wrong authority, or a filing that collapses under scrutiny. AI drafting makes that risk larger, not smaller. Checking every quote by hand is slow. LawEngine automates the source check against the actual law.
LawEngine is the citation-checking layer for legal AI.
How verification works
The public verifier answers the filing question attorneys actually have: does the quoted law match the authority being cited?
Drop in legal text from a brief, motion, or AI draft that includes a citation and quoted law.
LawEngine resolves the cited authority and checks the quoted text against the cited source and the broader primary-source corpus.
You see whether the citation is verified, found elsewhere, or unsupported before anything gets filed. No confidence score.
Three possible verdicts
Every claim gets one of these independent verdicts. They are not stages or a sequence.
The quoted law matches the cited authority.
The quoted law exists in the corpus, but under a different citation.
The quoted law was not found in any indexed authority in the live corpus.
Benchmark
The Citation Benchmark is a public test of legal citation checking: does the quoted passage actually match the cited source? Same 500 questions, same grading. The results speak for themselves.

Coverage
Illinois is the deepest public proof today: statutes, administrative code, court rules, constitutions, and selected federal authority with deterministic verification. Sweden Proof shows that the same source-grounded checking method can move across legal systems without losing traceability or rigor.

Mission
Legal AI will write more of the work product that reaches courts, agencies, and clients. If the citations inside that work cannot be checked against the source, the output becomes harder to trust at the exact moment trust matters most. LawEngine exists to keep briefs, motions, and legal research anchored to the law they claim to rely on.
